Just West of I-95 in Opa-Locka Florida you'll find a nano brewery called Legacy
Caribbean Craft Brewery. It's tucked away
just off 135th Street, about 10 minutes off the highway. We stopped by after going
to see a show in Miami Beach and we were rewarded with much more than just a good
tasting cold craft beer. Ismael was on duty manning the taps. After ordering a
flight we started talking and found out Ismael is the Master Brewer and he comes
from a long line of Master Brewers. His family comes from the Dominican Republic
where his grandfather was the originator of Presidente. Legacy has inherited that
island style, it's in there genes. They call it the "Caribbean Island Effect".
They brew small batches and when we were there they had 12 offerings on tap. There
was nothing too extreme on either end of the spectrum. Easy sipping, friendly
flavors - just what you would want when you're sitting on the beach watching the
waves gently break on shore. If you can't make it to the beach, the decor takes
you there with a ruhm shack feel. We tried all 12. The IPA's were enough to
satisfy your need for some hoppiness but not too much: Gee White, Humble Noble (6%
ABV) (7% ABV) and Alvita(7.2% ABV). Humble was just right. They had three darker
brews: Javao a Brown Ale (6.2% ABV), Mulato a Stout(6% ABV), and El Congo and
Imperial Russian Stout (16% ABV). Javao hit the spot on this balmy 85 degree day
in February. There were 3 light ales: Chica a Blone Ale (5% ABV), Latitude Zero a
Mango Passion Ale (5.5% ABV), and Weiss Guy a White Wheat (5.5% ABV). Chica was
light an clean and it cleared our pallet for what came next. We finished with a
taste of the Kambukas. They had three varieties of the Native Floridian:
Blueberry, Blackberry and Tamarind (0% ABV). The blueberry was a yummy bubbly
drink to end the round. But just when we were ready to ask for the bill, a man
came in selling fresh ceviche. Remember that Caribbean Island Effect? Have you
ever been on the beach on a Caribbean Island. We only needed some sand under our
feet to complete the effect. We bought a fresh ceviche, Ismael suggested pairing
with a pint of Blonde and we kicked back for a couple more minutes to enjoy the
flavors. It was so good, we bought two more ceviches to go. We asked for the bill
- two flights plus a pint for just $27.50, add in the ceviche for $5. We had a
trip to the islands for $30 and a fine time meeting Ismael and talking with some
locals.
