Las Vegas Brewery Visit

2016-12-31

For a city located in the middle of the desert it's surprising to find so many choices to sample locally brewed craft beers. Not being associated with growing fresh ingredients nor having an abundant supply of water, our first search turned up 10 craft breweries and one homebrew shop. We only had time to visit two shops: Hop Nuts and Big Dog Brewery.

Hop Nuts Brewery

Just North of the Stratosphere our first stop was at Hop Nuts Brewery on Main st. We stepped inside and felt like we went through a wormhole leaving the neon signs and fake smiles behind us in the gutter on Las Vegas Blvd. We knew we were entering a neighborhood bar and they were getting ready to hold Human Experience night. But hold on, the bar was the first thing that captured our attention. I put on my reading glasses, and what first appeared to be a faux granite slab came into focus and it was actually a twenty-five foot bed of grain under resin. Awesome. I snapped a picture and sent it home with a note that we need to make one for our backyard. The tap list announced 12 house brews and 10 others from local breweries. After sampling a few from the taps we chose to start with a Wit and a Lager. Then we had a flight to see how far the variety could go. Overall the selection was good, the atmosphere was small town even though you are in sin city, and the grain bed bar is awesome.

Big Dog
Brewery

Big Dog Brewery is definitely the big dog in town. With a 15bbl system and 18 house brews on tap they are most likely the largest brewery in Vegas. After working up a thirst we stopped at Big Dog for lunch. We started with a flight of 1,2,3,4,5. As the food arrived we had a second flight of 1,2,3,4,5.
